Academy President Professor Sir Robert Lechler PMedSci summarises key challenges and opportunities for the Academy in its 20th anniversary year.

In 2018, the NHS celebrates its 70th birthday, the UK prepares to leave the European Union, and the Academy of Medical Sciences continues to prepare for and work towards the medicine of the future. From scientific obesity and antimicrobial resistance, to public mistrust of experts and Brexit, from new work in genomics and digital technologies, to how to have a good death: Sir Robert introduces the Academy’s continually outward-looking policy work and activities. Professor Sir Robert Lechler PMedSci has been the President of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences since 2015. He is also a nephrologist and immunologist, in addition to being the Vice Principal (Health) at King’s College London, and Executive Director of King’s Health Partners.
