An hour’s drive from Caracas…here in the state of La Guaira Guaira…there’s disappointment in the air…Opposition leader Juan Guaido hails from here and residents in his hometown Cara-ba-eda still believe in the Venezuela politician…even if his poltical movement has failed to depose President Nicolas Maduro…And the political and humanitarian crisis that’s rattled the nation for the past 7 years continues:
“Sometimes I shut down, but I have never lost faith. I know it’s not easy. We aren’t fighting against something purely political: we are fighting against a sort of gang: people who have weapons and think they can maintain power at any cost A year ago – on January 23rd 2019- Guaido proclaimed himself the interim, acting president of Venezuela. The parlimentary speaker said President Maduro’s re-election was fraudulant and invalid… Over 50 nations and hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans agreed…But since the massive street protests, the momentum to oust Maduro has fizzled over the past year. María Belén Alcántrara, deputy director at the school Los Corales Guaido went to as a boy (female, 63 years old, Spanish, 29 sec): “We fell into a lethargy, after such a busy 2019 when we believed that everything would happen, that Venezuela would return to democracy, that we would start a new stage in history, we all fell into a moment of despair, of sadness.” On the diplomatic front, Juan Guaido still maintains widespread support abroad…But with Maduro still safely ensconsed in power, the repression of political opposition in Venezuela continues …leading to an ebbing enthousiasm at home,
