For more:
Just two days after the recent election in China’s Taiwan region, Nauru, a small island country in the South Pacific, severed ties with Taipei. Its parliament has swiftly approved a motion to restore diplomatic relations with Beijing, much to Washington’s disappointment and anger. In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan talks to Yang Xiyu, a senior research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies, to discuss the timing of Nauru’s momentous decision and its repercussions in the South Pacific region and beyond. What will Nauru gain from this switch, and how can China and Nauru engage in mutually beneficial cooperation, especially given the impact of climate change on island nations in the South Pacific? Yang also points at Washington’s purely opportunistic attitude toward Taipei and reiterates that Taiwan is part of China.
