Memorial Day: Biden pays tribute to America’s fallen in speech at Arlington cemetery

Global News published this video item, entitled “Memorial Day: Biden pays tribute to America’s fallen in speech at Arlington cemetery” – below is their description.

President Biden paid tribute to America’s fallen service members and remembered his late son Beau Biden at the Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and delivering a Memorial Day address as part of tradition.

“Memorial day is always a day where pain and pride are mixed together,” Biden said on the seven-year anniversary of his late son’s death, a veteran and former federal prosecutor who had died from a brain tumour in 2015.

Near the end of his address, the president emphasised the importance of democracy and the value in defending it. “Democracy is not perfect … but it’s worth fighting for,” the president said. “If necessary, worth dying for.”

The First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin were also in attendance.

The Monday ceremony to honour those who have given their lives came after the president grieved with the shattered community of Uvalde, Texas on Sunday, where 21 people had been killed in a deadly elementary school shooting.
