Major airlines have suspended flights to Israel after the nation declared war following a massive surprise attack by Hamas over the weekend. American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines suspended services, as the U.S. State Department issued travel advisories for the region, citing potential for terrorism and civil unrest.
At the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, travellers were seen gathering in waiting areas as some flights were cancelled, while some Israeli residents returned from overseas.
“I am feeling a lot of mixed emotions to be here because I am very fortunate to serve my country but of course I am feeling horrible about what happened over the past 48 hours,” said Israeli resident Amit Arbel, who serves in the Israeli navy and managed to come back from the U.S. after visiting family in Boston.
According to Reuters, Israel’s airports authority said Ben Gurion continued to handle arrivals and departures. When asked if any other security precautions were being taken, the airport authority did not immediately respond.
