High-ranking members of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard have reportedly been killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike in Syria. Iranian and Syrian state media say a commander and one of his deputies died in the strike as well as two more members of the force. It hit a building in the capital Damascus. Rescuers are still searching for people trapped under the rubble. Regional tensions are escalating as Israel continues its war on Hamas in response to the October 7 terror attacks.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon to the southwest, the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest.
