China has claimed the top spot since the 1950s, but India is forecast to finally overtake China’s population. They are both neck and neck at 1.4 billion citizens. But India’s population is set to keep growing, peaking in the 2060s, while China’s appears to be already declining.
As China and India collect census data differently, and due to the large numbers, it is hard to say exactly when India surpasses China. But demographers say it is happening some time this month. It may have actually already happened.
