Grant Shapps and Michael Portillo promote competition to host headquarters of Great British Railways

The Telegraph published this video item, entitled “Grant Shapps and Michael Portillo promote competition to host headquarters of Great British Railways” – below is their description.

Towns and cities at the heart of Britain’s industrial revolution nearly 200 years ago will compete to become the new home of Great British Railways.

York, Doncaster and Darlington are among the bidders launching a charm offensive to convince the public to back their campaigns.

Ministers have announced a public vote on where Great British Railways will be headquartered, with the winning bid in line to generate hundreds of new jobs for the local area.

The public body, bringing track and trains under the control of one body, is the centrepiece of the biggest shake-up of the industry in more than a quarter of a century. Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, announced the reforms last May in a bid to address years of bad service on the railways.

Voting is a method for a group, such as a meeting or an electorate, in order to make a collective decision or express an opinion usually following discussions, debates or election campaigns. Democracies elect holders of high office by voting. Residents of a place represented by an elected official are called “constituents”, and those constituents who cast a ballot for their chosen candidate are called “voters”. There are different systems for collecting votes, but while many of the systems used in decision-making can also be used as electoral systems, any which cater for proportional representation can only be used in elections.

In smaller organizations, voting can occur in different ways. Formally via ballot to elect others for example within a workplace, to elect members of political associations or to choose roles for others. Informally voting could occur as a spoken agreement or as a verbal gesture like a raised hand or electronically.
