The authorities in El Salvador have been conducting a massive security operataion as part of a crackdown on gangs in the country. Thousands of troops and police officers have been deployed to the province of Cabanas where the government says members of two gangs are hiding out.
The Barrio 18 and MS 13 gangs control much of the country and a substantial part of its basic economic activity El Salvador’s government has detained over 70,000 people since declaring a state of emergency a year and a half ago.
