Deena Kastor bounced back from an unfortunate Beijing Olympic marathon bid – where she broke a foot – to claim a commanding victory in the Scottish capital last Sunday.
She rounded the challenging 10K course in 32:38. The 36 year old American had been training in the Rocky Mountains and also said she feels a “young 36” – hoping to carry on with her fitness campaign right into the next Olympics.
Her distinctive arm-pumping style put her 36 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, Jelena Prokopcuka.
Micah Kogo, five weeks after smashing Haile Gebrselassie’s world record for the distance, adopted front running tactics to claim victory in a time of 28min 13sec. He beat fellow Kenyan and last year’s winner, Bernard Kipyego, by 14 seconds.
Acknowledging the difficulty of the conditions, Kogo said: “It wasn’t easy. Apart from the hills it was very, very windy.”
The course is so notorious that competitors from last weekend’s race can enter their times into an “Edinburgh Factor” number cruncher which gives runners the chance to see what time they would have got on a flat course.
