YouTube, Facebook (which also includes Instagram) and Twitter dominate most of the content published on the internet. That is a great power but also a great responsibility. On the one hand, they must ensure freedom of expression and diversity of opinion: on the other hand, governments in many countries require them to prevent the spread of extremist and hate messages.
All this puts the big platforms in a very complicated situation: the line between legitimate opinions and hate speech can be very blurred in many cases. However, political pressure is forcing them to act fast and self-regulate. The European Union is pushing the big platforms to accept a code of conduct that would, in essence, imply a degree of self-censorship.
The question is: Is this good news? Are there precedents of self-censorship in democratic countries? Is this really a good method for avoiding extremist messages? In this video we tell you all about it.
