As the climate crisis worsens, some of the world’s largest ice sheets in Greenland are rapidly melting, causing global sea levels to rise.
For thousands of years, ice sheets would melt and glaciers would slowly slide into the sea. But the ice was replenished by snowfall, maintaining a relative balance. Now, warmer water is one factor melting ice shelves more quickly.
Eric Sorensen explains how much zombie ice — areas of glaciers that are not being replenished with new ice as they melt — is driving up waters, and which Canadian communities are set to be directly affected.
