Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has named Mary Simon, an Inuit leader, as Canada’s first Indigenous governor general.

The 74-year-old is renowned for her work on the Arctic, and her fierce advocacy for Indigenous rights and culture. She’s also spent much of her career pushing for increased access to health care, mental health services and better education.
