Details about the Cold Case Investigation

Vince Pankoke, was a former FBI agent who was called up by a Dutch friend two years into his retirement, in 2016, and invited to participate in the investigation into who betrayed Anne Frank’s family in World War II.

The difference in this investigation was to view the betrayal as a criminal offence, and therefore investigate it as a cold case.

A book about this investigation, called The Betrayal of Anne Frank has been produced, and a documentary film has also been produced.

1 thought on “Who betrayed Anne Frank and her family?”

  1. I watched the 60 Minutes piece on the possible culprit who betrayed Anne Frank. The question that wasn’t addressed is why did the Jewish council have the list of addresses of Jews in hiding? It doesn’t seem like it could have served any good purpose and could only jeopardize the safety of those in hiding as it seems, tragically, was the case. I’m curious if anyone knows or has a theory about this.

It also seems that the suspect is getting off rather easily with the rationale that he was a Jew under Nazi rule who needed to protect himself. Protecting yourself at the expense of dozens, hundreds, (thousands?) of people? I don’t know what I would have done in his shoes. But if I did what he did, I would have been a coward.

Maybe that’s why he died a mere five years later. It must have been very hard to live knowing you had been complicit in so many deaths.
