A new coronavirus variant Omicron first identified in South Africa on November 24, 2021, has been named “a coronavirus variant of concern” by the World Health Organization (WHO). Since its discovery, it has been spreading around the world, including to locations in Asia, Europe and Australia. The new strain, also known as B.1.1.529, is the most mutated form of the virus recorded so far and the fifth variant to be given a special designation. It is not yet clear whether Omicron is more transmissible than previously identified variants and the severity of related cases, including among vaccinated people, is also not yet fully understood. But the WHO has suggested that Omicron may be able to reinfect those who have recovered from Covid-19 infections, and many nations banned flights from countries in southern Africa.
