Global News published this video item, entitled “What comes next after trial for Canadian Michael Spavor, detained in China, ends in just two hours?” – below is their description.
The trials for two detained Canadians, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, are underway in China. While Kovrig’s trial is scheduled for Monday, Spavor appeared before the Chinese courts last night.
His closed-door trial lasted just two hours and ended without a verdict.
Canadian officials were barred from attending the trial of Spavor, who was being tried in the Chinese city of Dandong on espionage charges after over two years in detention.
Officials will also be barred from attending the upcoming trial of Michael Kovrig, a second Canadian who has been held for the same charges, Global Affairs Canada confirmed Thursday.
The Chinese government is accusing Canada of being “hypocritical and arrogant” after Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau issued concerns about the lack of transparency in the trial process.
Abigail Bimman has more on what comes next for the two Canadians.
