The COVID-19 #pandemic is still raging, and vaccines are seen as a game-changer. According to the #WHO, at least seven vaccines made with three different technologies have been rolled out since February 18, and there are more than 200 additional #vaccine candidates in development, of which more than 60 are in clinical development. COVAX is part of the ACT Accelerator, which the WHO launched with partners in 2020 to ensure equal access to COVID-19 vaccines for all participating countries. China has joined the COVAX initiative and vowed to provide 10 million doses to the program to help developing countries. Until last week, China has provided vaccine assistance to at least 53 developing countries and exported vaccines to 27 countries. However, the WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in January that deals between some high-income economies and vaccine manufacturers are undermining the COVAX initiative. Of some 50 countries where vaccines are being administered nearly all are wealthy nations, and 75 percent of doses were given in only ten countries. Can the pandemic act as a wake-up call to the fragmented global governance system?
Tian Wei spoke to Zha Daojiong in Beijing. He has been researching how the unfolding geopolitics has shaped the world’s response to COVID-19, particularly the latest debate on vaccine nationalism.
