Queensland’s biggest regional university is working through a COVID-19 recovery plan that will see forced and voluntary redundancies, to save up to $55 million a year.
Central Queensland University lost $116 million of its annual income this year because of a decline in international student numbers.
Vice-chancellor Professor Nick Klomp said he could not yet confirm how many jobs would be cut to make up for lost income.
“There will be forced redundancies I’m really sad to say I just don’t know how many,” he said.
“This year we will have about $116 million less than we expected compared to say last year; that’s about a quarter of the university’s income.
“I wouldn’t put a number of job cuts on this, because it depends on where else I can save.
“It depends on discussions with the Government, in terms of grants and loans, and of course it depends on discussions with the staff and their unions, so way too early to be saying the actual number.”
