Press conference by Frederick Kenney, interim Coordinator for the UN at the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) for the Black Sea Initiative.
Frederick Kenney, interim Coordinator for the UN at the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) for the Black Sea Initiative, said, “We are off with a very good start.”
Today (10 Aug), briefing reporters from Istanbul, Kenney, said, “We have produced detailed procedures for vessels to follow when participating in the initiative. Those were disseminated to the shipping industry earlier this week.”
He also said that the JCC had authorized 12 vessels to depart the Ukrainian ports carrying over 370,000 metric tons of grain and other food stocks.
When the war started, those vessels had been stranded in the three ports covered by the Black Sea Initiative.
“Our priority is to free up pier space in those ports so that the vessels come in and take new cargo,” explained Kenney
He added, “We have also authorized the movement of four vessels into the Ukrainian park ports so far for loading.”
Kenney also recognized and appreciated the cooperation and commitment of all the parties involved – Ukraine, Türkiye, and the Russian Federation – to implement the initiative.
He concluded, “The agreement is scheduled to last for 120 days, and we still have much work ahead of us to ensure that the implementation of the initiative translates into real results to address food insecurity around the globe and to stabilize global food markets.”
