The United States has confirmed it will add dozens of Chinese companies to a trade blacklist, including leading chipmaker SMIC. The action will force SMIC to seek a special license before it can buy essential materials from U.S. suppliers. The U.S. Commerce Department accused the company of being linked to the Chinese military, saying it would “not allow advanced U.S. technology to help build the military of an increasingly belligerent adversary.” SMIC has repeatedly said it has no relationship with the Chinese military.
