The UK Government announced on Tuesday the country’s coronavirus death toll had reached over 35,000.
Speaking at a briefing from Downing Street George Eustice, UK Environment Secretary, said 545 people had died of the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the total amount of deaths to 35,341.
He also said the government had established a new “COVID alert system” to monitor the level of threat posed to the public by the pandemic.
He said there were five levels of severity and during the lockdown period the country was in level 4.
“Thanks to the hard work and sacrifices of the British people in this lockdown we have helped to bring the R level down and we are now in a position to begin moving to Level 3 in careful steps,” he said.
Eustice said only around a third of the harvest workforce, which is usually made up of workers from other countries, was currently in the UK.
He called on people, particularly those who had been furloughed, to take a second job and help “bring that harvest home”.
