At the ongoing Two Sessions, agriculture independence and food security have been raised as key areas for technological development. But more importantly, Chinese authorities have stressed that China’s food self-sufficiency must be achieved without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Research in the diversity of seeds and livestock have been identified as a way to boost yield with China’s finite arable land. Why has China dedicated so much to food security and can it achieve these goals? For answers, we speak to Liu Yonghao, founder and chairman of New Hope, the biggest animal feed producer in China.
