The black soldiers who risked their lives for South Africa

Sky News published this video item, entitled “The black soldiers who risked their lives for South Africa” – below is their description.

Around 80,000 black South Africans fought for their country in the Second World War as part of the Native Military Corps.

But, they were segregated from white soldiers, treated as inferior, and their contribution went largely unrecognised until now.

75 years on. the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has begun a process of commemoration.

Our Africa Correspondent John Sparks has been speaking to one of those soldiers who survived to see it happen.

  1. White South African WW2 soldiers never received a free house as stated by John. I wish an important news article was correctly researched. such shoddy work detracts from the story and makes it sound like a propaganda story or fake news.
