The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will continue to closely work with Japan in preparation of the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, while taking a series of COVID-19 prevention measures to ensure the safety of participants, said the IOC president on Wednesday.
Thomas Bach, president of the IOC, said in a video conference that planning for the Games now involves multiple options, with all of them prioritizing the health of the athletes.
The remarks were made following the uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic, which is making it impossible for officials to say definitively that the Games will happen or, if they do, what they might look like.
IOC and officials in Japan postponed the Olympics opening to July 23, 2021 amid soaring COVID-19 infections and lockdowns across the world.
“Now the IOC executive board and the entire IOC, is following the principle we have established already before the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games that the first priority is about the safety of all participants of the Olympic Games. So we continue to be guided by the advice of the World Health Organization, and based on these advice and based on the ever developing situation, we are preparing a multiple scenario with regard to addressing the health situation then next July, in August,” said the IOC President Thomas Bach.
The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee announced at the 136th Session of the IOC – the first-ever Session held by video conference – that all the venues intended for the Games in 2020 have been secured for next year and confirmed the sports competition schedule.
