India is set to become the world’s most populous nation by mid-2023, according to UN figures, overtaking China. India was the first country to adopt family planning as an official policy in 1952. But since a brutal programme of forced male sterilisation in the 1970s, the pendulum has swung to rely on women undergoing more invasive operations because of men refusing vasectomies. Experts say education is key to fighting common misconceptions about the male procedure.
