While football stadiums have sat eerily quiet this season, the sound of online abuse directed at players – and black players in particular – has been as loud as ever.
To counter it, the social media accounts of clubs, players and organisations across sport fell silent today, beginning a four-day boycott which they hope will pressure tech giants to act.
No one is under any illusion though, that it will take more to make those responsible for the abuse step away from the keyboard.
