‘Something I’ve never seen before’: Hawaii ambulance fire explosion leaves patient dead. An ambulance exploded around 9pm on Wednesday for unknown reasons. A 91-year-old patient died and the EMT in the back of the vehicle is in critical condition. The driver was uninjured. Thick plumes of smoke and massive flames were seen in witness footage escaping the vehicle as the fire raged on for 11 minutes. ‘This is something I’ve never seen before,’ Dr. Jim Ireland, the emergency services director, said.
