Save the ocean ⁠— protect the future

Humans depend on the ocean for all of our needs: from the air we breathe to the food we eat and the energy we use. However, unsustainable human activities and overexploitation of natural resources are imperiling the ocean’s biodiversity. Ensuring healthy marine life is a major goal of the 2020 United Nations Ocean Conference, to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 2 to 6 June.

Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve’s beaches are a major destination and much of the nation’s architecture dates to the 1500s–1800s, when Portugal had a powerful maritime empire.
