Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly are expected to announce additional support for Ukraine on Sunday.
The announcement comes just hours after Canada announced its airspace would be closed to Russian aircraft amid the ongoing invasion and conflict in Ukraine.
Canada also joined the U.S., European Union and the United Kingdom in moving to block select Russian banks from the SWIFT global financial messaging system and to impose “restrictive measures” on its central bank.
The various sanctions and airspace restrictions follow a slew of announcements over the past week, including on Friday when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada was placing sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over invasion of Ukraine.
Trudeau also said that Canada will be placing sanctions on Belarus, targeting 57 individuals, for aiding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Canada will also support Russia’s removal from the SWIFT banking system, Trudeau said, to exclude Russia from making transactions around the world.
