South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Return of the apes: Indonesia releases first group of rescued orangutans since start of pandemic” – below is their description.
Ten orangutans were airlifted back to their natural habitat on Indonesia’s Borneo island in early February 2021, the first group to be released in a year since such rehabilitation programme operations were suspended because of fears of Covid-19 infections. Poaching and habitat loss have been decimating the Southeast Asian nation’s orangutan population even before the coronavirus emerged as another potential threat to the critically endangered species.
