President Donald Trump on Tuesday offered sympathetic words to Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime companion of Jeffrey Epstein who stands accused of facilitating the abuse of girls by the now-deceased sex offender.
“I just wish her well, frankly,” Trump said when asked about Maxwell during a news conference about the White House coronavirus response.
Maxwell, was denied bail last week and is to remain behind bars as she awaits trial on charges she recruited girls for the financier to sexually abuse more than two decades ago.
The British socialite was romantic partner of Epstein, who killed himself in prison several weeks after being charged with sex trafficking.
The president also urged Americans to wear masks if they are “close to each other” or in a group.
Trump said he has absolutely “no problem” with wearing masks. “I carry it and I will use it gladly,” Trump said.
“Anything that can potentially help, and certainly can potentially help, is a good thing,” Trump said.
He also said he supports continuing federal unemployment payments, which expire at the end of the month unless Congress acts to pass another stimulus measure.
But Trump said he backs a number around 70 percent of the first payment so that “people are going to want to go back to work as opposed to making so much money that they don’t have to.”
