Kenya’s Kakuma settlement is home to three of the 29 athletes competing for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team at the Tokyo Games. Runners Rose Nathike, Anjelina Nadai Lohalith and Paulo Amotun have been living and training in Kenya since fleeing their war-torn home in South Sudan. Their families have been sending messages of support as the athletes prepare to compete in Tokyo.

South Sudan has a population of 12 million, mostly of the Nilotic peoples, and it is demographically among the youngest nations in the world, with roughly half under 18 years old. The majority of inhabitants adhere to Christianity or various traditional faiths.
The Sudan, officially the Republic of the Sudan, is a country in Northeast Africa.
