The South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison after shooting and killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in 2013. After working as a paralegal, Steenkamp had a successful modelling career, appearing in several magazines and as the face of companies such as Avon cosmetics. She often used her platform, mainly social media, to speak out on women’s rights and domestic abuse. In the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013, Pistorius killed her when he shot four times through the locked door of his bedroom toilet, later saying he thought she was an intruder
