Press briefing by Christoph Heusgen, Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations on Germany’s term on the Security Council, which comes to an end on 31 December 2020.
Speaking to reporters marking the end of Germany’s two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, German Ambassador Christof Heusgen today (22 Dec) said, “we believe that we belong into the Security Council also as permanent member.”
Heusgen said “we also believe that our policy, the policy of strengthening, what I said at the beginning, strengthening of multilateralism, strengthening of our rules-based international order, that makes us a natural member of the Security Council.” SOUNDBITE (English) Christof Heusgen, Permanent Representative of
He also noted that “Germany is on top of the list of donors” of UN agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP, UNHCR, or the World Food Programme.
Turning to issues on the Council’s agenda, the German Ambassador spoke about the status of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He said, “there is willingness of everybody to return to the JCPOA. We have heard that from the Biden administration, but of course this has to be formalized. And, things have moved on since then, and we have to make sure that we return to the agreement, and I am sure in one form or the other, this has to be of course specified.”
On Western Sahara he said, “we have not made progress on the political track. We, since 1991, basically we are trying to come to a resolution of the issue. The objective was to have a referendum that should decide what happens with Western Sahara, should that be an independent state, or should that be kind of autonomy in Morocco. And this is where we still stand today, but on the ground the situation has changed.”
