On August 7, the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) continued its actual-combat joint exercises and training in the seas and airspace around the island of Taiwan. The Air Force of the Eastern Theater Command dispatched multiple groups of multi-type aircraft in its drills to enhance joint ground strike and long-range air strike capabilities.

On the evening of August 2, disregarding China’s strong opposition and stern representations, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a blatant visit to China’s Taiwan region. The PLA has conducted its largest military exercises in six strategic areas that encircle Taiwan island since August 4.

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
