‘Over 1.6 billion learners have experienced a disruption in education’ – General Assembly President

Video message by Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the President of the UN General Assembly for the Virtual Briefing of the Group of Friends for Education and Lifelong Learning.

The President of the UN General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande said that the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented school and university closures that have disrupted the education of over 1.6 billion learners, which affected their basic literacy achievements and threatened their analytical skills and critical thinking.

In his message to the Virtual Briefing of the Group of Friends of Education and Lifelong Learning, the President of the General Assembly called on the Group to recommit to allocating at least 4% of GDP and at least 15% of public expenditure to education, while calling on donors to meet the UN target of 0.7% of gross national income to foreign aid and allocate 10% of that aid to primary and secondary education, to help bridge the annual financing gap regarding education.”
