Premier Gladys Berejiklian has today held virtual meetings with mayors from Sydney’s hotspot council areas to discuss their concerns. The meeting was “a long time coming” for Canterbury-Bankstown mayor Khal Asfour, who said it “would’ve been really good if we had this meeting 10, 11 weeks ago to be able to convey some of the concerns of our residents to her directly”. Asfour says the meeting “got a bit heated”, as he discussed the concerns about discrimination and the tougher restrictions his council area have had to endure.
“I think it was important that she got the message that people here feel that we’re stigmatised, that we’ve been treated differently to everyone else,” he said. “Her answer to that was she trying to protect everybody and make sure everyone was safe, and we totally understand that. We just think it could’ve been done a different way.”
Mr Asfour says “there were no guarantees given today” but that the premier did promise she would go back to meet with Cabinet and NSW Health “and look at any sort of restrictions that can be eased to alleviate the pressure on our communities before the 70% target is reached”. The restriction he wants to see lifted first is the 9pm curfew. “We’re sick and tired of the helicopters flying overhead, waking up small children at 2, 3 o’clock in the morning.”
