The head of Niger’s presidential guard has named himself the head of a transitional government after Wednesday’s coup that overthrew democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
General Abdourahmane Tchiani made the announcement on state TV.
He said the takeover was necessary to avoid the “gradual and inevitable demise” of Niger.
