Niger coup chaos: Rebels set fires to cars and buildings as pro-West President overthrown. Members of the elite guard yesterday sealed off access to the residence and offices of President Mohamed Bazoum in the capital Niamey. The soldiers said ‘all institutions’ in the country would be suspended, borders were closed and a curfew imposed ‘until further notice’ from 10pm to 5am. ‘We, the defence and security forces… have decided to put an end to the regime’ of President Bazoum, Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane said in a televised address late Wednesday (main). Home to around 22 million people, Niger is two-thirds desert and frequently ranks at the bottom of the UN’s Human Development Index. It has been blighted by the jihadist campaigns of several extremist groups, and the country shares borders with Mali, Libya and Burkina Faso – three nations in which Russia’s Wagner Group has a strong presence.
