Global News published this video item, entitled “Newfoundland and Labrador’s election during COVID-19 ends with Liberals securing slim majority” – below is their description.
The provincial election in Newfoundland and Labrador is finally over after a four-week campaign turned to 10 weeks when a COVID-19 outbreak upended the process, cancelling in-person voting the night before polls were set to open.
When the election was called in January — satisfying a provincial law that required the new premier, Andrew Furey, call an election within 12 months of his swearing-in — the opposition parties raised concerns of holding a vote during the pandemic but the Liberals persevered amid significant approval ratings and polling when the election began.
The opposition leveraged the outbreak against Furey but despite the significantly delayed election and a format for how it was conducted that has never been seen before in the country, the premier was able to win a slim majority. But as Ross Lord explains, all that maneuvering could end in a court challenge.
