Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: Armenian-Lebanese opera singer Kevork Hadjian dies in battle

Global News published this video item, entitled “Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: Armenian-Lebanese opera singer Kevork Hadjian dies in battle” – below is their description.

With photographs and flowers, the community of Lebanon’s largely Armenian town Anjar, are commemorating one of their own killed in battle in Nagorno-Karabakh. Kevork Hajian, an opera singer who was born in Anjar, but had lived in Armenia, travelled to the South Caucasus region to fight for his homeland, his family said. Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but is populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians. Hundreds have been killed in more than a month of fighting in the worst violence the area has seen for more than 25 years. Among those killed in the recent fighting was Hajian. The singer’s 74-year-old mother, Sosse Hadjian, said she had spent days watching TV, weeping over slain Armenian fighters. But she didn’t know her son was at the front until her brother delivered the news of his death. “The whole village knew but I didn’t,” she said of her son’s death. “But I’m also proud he joined for Armenians, for the homeland.” The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan met international mediators in Geneva on Oct. 30 in the latest round of talks to resolve conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. The ministers are meeting envoys from France, Russia and the United States, co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group created to mediate a conflict that has escalated in recent days, a diplomat in the Swiss city told Reuters.
