Sri Lanka is home to the world’s first and among the largest elephant orphanages. Established in 1975, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was intended to take in some lost, unweaned elephant orphans. Later, the big guys stayed and multiplied. Over the past four decades, 75 elephants were born there. Our reporter Liu Jiaxin takes us to the park for a look at what impact rescue efforts have had on the endangered species.
