Explorers on a scientific research mission have discovered one of the largest coral reefs in the world off the coast of Tahiti, Unesco announced on January 20, 2022. The reef is about 3km (2 miles) long and consists of giant, rose-shaped corals. Sitting more than 30 metres (98ft) below the surface, the reef was discovered in an area of the sea known as the mesophotic zone – derived from the Greek words for “middle” and “light”. Its location much deeper than where most known coral reefs are found suggests that it could be safer from the impact of seawater warming that has damaged shallower reefs around the world.
