Qin Ning, a freshman at Jiangsu Vocational College of Finance and Economics, developed a microbial agent that can increase the output of heavy metal-contaminated soil by 20 percent. Through her observation, she discovered why a field in her hometown could not grow national standard crops: the soil had been polluted by the improper use of fertilizers and heavy metals.
Led by her tutor, she and her team started to conduct a comprehensive study of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). After carrying out more than 50 lab experiments and four field experiments for a whole year, they finally succeeded. According to their tutor, the research not only solves the problem of reducing chemical fertilizer usage but also improves the polluted soil to national standards.
It largely saves production costs and minimizes contaminated land reuse, raising the output by 20 percent.
