The yellow flag law and permissive gun measures in Maine are coming under greater scrutiny in the aftermath of mass shootings that authorities say were carried out by a man who was committed to a mental health facility for two weeks this past summer and had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” a military base.
In an expanding manhunt, police fanned out across southern Maine with an arrest warrant for Robert R. Card, accused of killing 18 people and wounding 13 others.
Kris Brown, president of Brady United Against Gun Violence, said red flag laws, which allow courts to issue “extreme risk protection orders” (ERPO) removing firearms from individuals considered at risk of harming themselves or others, could help prevent such shootings.
Meanwhile, the White House called on new House speaker Mike Johnson to find common ground on gun safety legislation.
