Machete attack, cars stolen, house set on fire in Townsville crime rampage | ABC News

ABC News (Australia) published this video item, entitled “Machete attack, cars stolen, house set on fire in Townsville crime rampage | ABC News” – below is their description.

Townsville is picking up the pieces today after an overnight crime rampage in which a man was attacked with a machete, cars were stolen and a house was torched in a suspected arson attack.

Police say if the violence being perpetrated by a certain cohort of young people is not curbed soon, they fear someone will get killed.

A 28-year-old man was struck with the machete at his Cosgrove home about midnight before his assailants then took his car.

He was taken to the Townsville University Hospital, where he was treated for multiple lacerations to his back and hands.

Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said the man was lucky to be alive.

“The gentlemen has gone out to try to confront these people and it was only when the offender turned around that he saw the machete and then he has been struck in the hand and fallen over and got struck in the back,” he said.

“It’s only through the grace of God that he was not more seriously injured or worst-case scenario killed.

“We deployed approximately 40 police to respond to this and we had assistance from our public safety response team.”

Police were later called to an address in Townsville City after reports the same group was attempting to steal another vehicle.
