The prime ministers of Australia and Japan signed a security pact on October 22, 2022, agreeing to share more sensitive intelligence and to deepen military cooperation. The “Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation” agreement was described as a revamp of a pact signed in 2007. Political analysts said the declaration is aimed at countering China’s military rise as Beijing pushes for greater influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
