Indonesian governor sentenced to prison for blasphemy

A court in Indonesia has sentenced the governor of Jakarta, the country’s capital, to two years in prison for blasphemy after he was convicted of insulting the Quran.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, known as Ahok, was the city’s first Christian governor in 50 years. The case has been seen as a major test for the predominantly Muslim country’s justice system.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from Jakarta.

“Wow! Seeing someone found guilty of Blasphemy in 2017 feels a little strange. Only last week we heard that Stephen Fry has been looked into by the Irish police for the same crime. Its a real shame that such laws still exist to my mind, but, in the case of Stephen Fry, that man is a prize twerp, and I’d actually allow this law to stay if it means getting him behind bars!!”
