Jonathan Van-Tam Jonathan Van Tam, the deputy chief medical officer for England, has said that the newly discovered omicron variant is of “heightened concern”.

Speaking at a press briefing in Downing Street, Mr Van Tam said that scientists all around the world are in agreement that the omicron variant is of real concern, but admitted that a lot is still not known about it.

England’s deputy chief medical officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said omicron – the “new kid on the block” was – concerning.

“It’s always been the case that, at some point, we have always said it – we are going to get a variant that gives us heightened concern.

“We are at that moment with Omicron, it is the new kid on the block for now and I think it’s true to say that scientists around the world, not just in the UK, agree that this one is of increased concern.”
