Hurricane Agatha plowed into beach resorts and residential homes on Mexico’s southern Pacific coast on Monday, bringing torrential rains and the threat of flooding as the first named storm in the eastern Pacific this year.
Hitting as a Category 2 storm, Agatha barrelled ashore blowing sustained winds of 169 kmph west of the beach town of Puerto Angel in Oaxaca state, before weakening as it moved inland, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said.
Agatha is expected to dump 5-41 cm of rain on Oaxaca, which could spark lethal flash flooding and mudslides, according to the NHC. Heavy rains are also expected to douse the state of Chiapas, as well as Veracruz, Tabasco and eastern parts of Guerrero.
The NHC said Agatha is the strongest hurricane to make landfall during the month of May along Mexico’s Pacific coast since records began in 1949.
